Sony Radios – Introduction

Sony was founded in 1946 as the Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunication Engineering Company) and its first consumer electronics product was an automatic rice cooker. In order to reach a global client base, the name Sony was thought up, which combines the Latin word for sound (“sonus”) and the English term “sonny-boy”.

In 1968, Sony became the first major Japanese business to open a factory in the UK. During the 1980s and 1990s, the company was awarded the Queen’s Award for Export on four occasions. Today, Sony UK employs around 45,000 people and their headquarters is located at Brooklands, near Weybridge, on the site of the old Brooklands racing circuit.
